Always myself. A good high preassure steamer first to get the worst dirt off, then car shampoo and sponge, then dry it off with a turtle wax cloth:icon_thumleft:

I use to park my Elise near a Car Wash place, the manager offered me free car washes if he could park it out the front... I watched how they washed cars and was horrified:eek:
I never let them touch it.

Luckily, punk grey doesn't show the dirt.... much

But dont you find that you get a sense of achievement when you stand back to see a gleaming 500.

I now wash her using the method shown on www.detailingworld.co.uk

It was so much on that forum, and so many products and words I have never seen or heard about that I didn`t understand what the best way to wash a car was. :(:(

Can you explain it cadbury, how you wash your car?

I have started using the 'Two Bucket Method (as below)from the thread http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=4637

Makes sense !

What is the "Two-Bucket Method"
Again, millions of people use a single bucket of car wash solution to wash their car, but if you read the threads on this site you will find most members wash their cars using the "Two-Bucket Method" - whats that?

As suggested by the name, the two bucket method uses two buckets, not one. In thie first bucket, you have your car wash solution as normal. In the second bucket you have clean fresh water. First off you soak your mitt in the wash solution and begin washing the car (as described below). Then, before dunking the wash mitt back into the wash solution, you rinse it out in the second bucket of fresh water - this rinses out the dirt and grit particles from this mitt so that they cannot come into contact with your paint, reducing the number of swirls inflicted.

A grit-guard is also a very worthwhile investment and sits at the bottom of the bucket (I have two, one in the rinsing bucket and one in the wash solution bucket). When dunking you mitt into the fresh water bucket, rub it across the grit guard to increase the amount of grit particles which are removed from the mitt. Also, it keeps them trapped at the bottom of the bucket so even less chance of the mitt picking them back up and them reaching your paintwork to inflict scratches.

Hi R500pop!

What I do is this:

If I do it on my job:
1: Spray soap solution from dispenser wit hose all over the car and lets it works for a couple of minutes.

2: High preassure the car thoroughly, from downside and up and then from the upside and down.

3: then I use a bucket of hot water with car shampoo and wash the car with a sponge.

4: Rinse it off with highpreassure(as above).

5: Dry off with a cloth to get rid of any water marks.

If home:

1: High preassure from downside and up to grt off the worst dirt

2: Bucket with hot water and spongewashing.

3: Rinse with high preassure as above

4: Dry off with a cloth to remove water marks

Is this a good way to wash my car or can I do this in a better way?

Thomas

For a simple "Maintenance Detail" on customers cars I do the following, this is just the washing/drying process, nothing else.

1. Pressure wash to remove loose dirt.

2. Soak with snow foam.

3. Whilst snow foam is left to dwel I spray a detergent under the arches & agitate with a soft brush.

4. Pressure wash to remove snowfoam from the body.

5. Spray tyre face with detergent & scrub with soft brush.

6. Clean wheels with Bilberry wheel cleaner & a selection of brushes, I clean both the front & the back of the wheel (inside the rim)

7. Pressure wash wheel arches to remove dirt.

8. Using a small round Swisswax style brush I do the door, bonnet, boot shuts, around the filler flap & around the edges of all the chrome trim, window seal etc using just water & Meg's Shampoo Plus.

9. Wash body using lambswool wish mitt & 2 bucket method, rinse the mitt in the clean water bucket often.

10. Pressure wash off all shampoo.

11. Using my blow drier I blow the water out of all areas where water gathers, this avoids unsightly streaks of water emerging once the car has dried.

12. Dry with a drying towel whilst spritzing the body with a quick detail spray to lubricaate the towel, also dry wheels last.

I always use a clean new sponge, can`t see anything wrong with that. After all they are made to be used on cars....Offcourse I rinse it all the time in the bucket with hot water:)

The surface of a sponge holds dirt against the paint. A wash mitt has a pile into which the dirt is drawn. The dirt is then released when the mitt is rinsed.

Hi,

Here in Luxembourg it is still allowed to use running water although it is not very economic but seen the quantity of rain we have there is no real problem with that.
I never use car wash and I prefer waiting for good weather and washing my car by hand.
A steam or high pressure cleaner is good as it saves water but you have to be very careful with wheel hubs, brake systems and ball joints as you press the water on places where it will take ages to come out again.
High pressure cleaner is totally banned on motorcycles as wheel bearings will be broke after one season.
I first wash off dust and dirt with the water hose from the car, starting always with the roof.
After this, if necessary some good car shampoo in a bucket of tempered water with a natural sponge I always start with the roof, then the windows around the car, front first, then hood, front end of the car and from front to rear both sides and at the and the rear hatch and bumper.
I make it that way in order to avoid scratching the paint with the sand and dirt picked up on the way.
A car is normally not dirty at the roof, so that's the place to start with.
The trunk lid is most dirty and that's the place to finish with.
Never wash the lower part of the car first as you will pick up plenty of sand on the sponge.
Needless to say that the wheels are the very last and I use a different sponge for them.

After this I rinse the car with fresh water and I dry it with a big size humid wringed leather piece using the same order than while washing, starting at the top, then from front to rear.

The leather has to be washed out several times during this operation and in order to avoid water lime traces this must be done while the car is still wet.
;)

Greetings:

Ban the sponge and circular motions !

Also read somewhere that the wax has to be applied from the bottom of the bonnet up towards the windscreen i.e. the way the air flows

This was left to dwell for 5mins whilst I made a nice warm cuppa.

Your car looks absolutely great, that`s for sure:) But it is impossible to use 2,5 - 3 hours to wash a car every time and I am sure my car looks almsost as good as yours with an hours normal wash( highpressure, bucket of hot water, carshampoo and sponge). I dont think I really need all that fancy washing stuff, to get it clean :) Another thing is that with sub zero degrees this is impossible 3-4 months of the year.... lol When it is this cold you have to be inside doing the washing...
When roads are constantly wet and full of salt the car gets dirty after 5 minutes of driving.....

But again your car is looking absolutely gorgeous:icon_thumleft:

Offcourse there will be a difference in a few years.... You just have to take a look at the pictures and we can all see that R500POP is an better washer than me... After all it seems to be his job:icon_thumleft: And I am sure I get more swirls in the paint than him:( But I still think I wash my car better than the average car owner:) I have had my Astra for nearly 4 years now(bought it new) and it still looks pretty good, but offcourse not perfect:) Only been handwashed like I described earlier. My point is that in different conditions of weather and temperature like we have in Scandinavia vs England it is not possible to wash a car like R500POP says... Sometimes we even have to drive our car through a washing machine to get the worst dirt of the car because it is impossible to wash it outside. And I am sure that my car gets just as clean even if I dont use all the expensive products that are availeble:) But I might get some more swirls in the paint as I said earlier.

Hope you all understood what I ment, a bit difficult to explain all this with my school englishlol

Never ment to say something bad about anyone, just trying to say that there is more than one way to wash a car:399:

I tried that two-bucket-method the last time I washed my car and it makes sence. Now that itīs freezing outside and I have to dry my car after washing it Iīm also putting on a-spray-it-on kind of wax, that goes on a wet car and then you dry it with chamois leather (i think is the name of it). I know itīs not a real wax, but it gives an ok shine between putting on a real wax, which I do about three times a year.

Normal well-soaked kitchen paper is the best wash medium...ever...the grit trap in some buckets is not entirely failsafe imo, the problem being with the stuff one cannot see that is embedded in a mitt or a sponge...

:eek::eek::eek::eek:

No really, you are kidding, right?

Any dirt on the surface will just get dragged accross the paintwork. With a lambswool mitt the dirt goes up into the pile, hence the rinse bucket, you rinse the mitt BEFORE putting it back into the wash bucket, thus avoinding gritt in the mitt.

Well :( I have to confess to something today: I was taking my Astra to the garage today to get an abs sensor changed. I tought the car was so dirty that I decided to drive it through a car wash before delivering it to the garage. Bought the most expensive washing program they had which included degrasing, normal wash and some polish sprayed on...At the price of 285kr!!!!
When the car came out of the machine there where scratches all over the right side of the car:mad: You could still see sand on the lower parts of the car, so it was obvious that the machine had not used enough water when washing.... The car was far from clean. I went straight in to the manager of the gasoline station and told her what had happend! She came with me out and had a look at the car and denied that the machine could do this. At that point I was pretty red in the face:mad::mad: Then the maintance guy who was responsible for the machine came and said the same thing, that the machine could not have done this....He even took me into the washing machine to show me the brushes it uses... When we were inside the machine there were another car inside but the machine did not go...the maintanance guy said to the driver that he should drive forward so the machine could start to wash, the driver replied that he was done washing, but the machine would not let him out of the garagelol You could not see that the car had been washed at all:eek: Well we did not get to an agreement at all so I did get the manager to stamp my washing bill so I could prove that I had told them straight away and I drove to the Opel garage. The Opel garage said that they would go over my paint and try to decide if the scratches were from the machine or not....
If they tought the machine had done this they would make a written statement for the damages.
Later that day the manager of the Esso station called me and asked me to come by tomorrow to fill out a damage scheme.

This became a long reply on the thread but I hope you all understand.

I usually dont use a machine, but I tought it was too dirty to be left at the garage so I did the car wash the lazy way. I wish I never had:mad::mad:
This machine I had used once before and then the car did become excellent. Very clean and very shiny....But not today:( I hope most of it can be polished off. At the gas stations cost offcourse....It was not deep scratches but it looked really bad in the sunlight:(

Silly question... but could it have been caused by the dirt on your car being distributed by the brushes ? The dealerships here usually clean our cars when they go in for repair. However, I have told them not to wash Cadbury, don't want 'circles' on the paintwork.

Hope you get it resolved to your satisfaction

I definately will wash my car myself and by hand. No car washing machine will ever see my little red baby. I have bought some of the best products available and hope to keep my car shiny for many years :)

Procedure for proper wash will be:

Mild degreaser (meguiars professional series)
Swissvax Car bath soap (getting a foam gun for my hose later)
Meguiars microfibre washmitt, 2 buckets with gritguard (one soap, one clean water)
Swissvax blue clay kit
Swissvax cleaner fluid (pre wax)
Swissvax Scuderia wax.

Using all microfibre: Mitt, Drying towel and polishing cloths and Swissvax applicator pads

I will also use Meguiars Hot Rims wheel cleaner and a wheelbrush.
After cleaning i'll apply Swissvax Pneu to the tires.

I use Swissvax Leather Glaze for my seats. Haven't gotten anything for interior detailing yet because the car is so new.

For in between cleaning i use the selfwash pressure washer at my petrol station and carefully dry off with a micofibre towel. Afterwards I use a microfibre cloth and Meguiars Quik Detailer, spray on wipe off.

I also use Autoglym glass polish on the windows. (Got it on sale)

And yes I am a freak...

:peace:

Usually in the summer, yes. In the winter, no. We have a 'traditional' hand car wash near my house and I take it there. Power washer to start, sponge wash afterwards and power washer rinse. Ģ3 - job done!
My husband is very much into car cleaning and has a multitude of products which cost a small fortune in the shed. Strangely enough, he never seems to have time to clean my car for me. He keeps saying he will, but doesn't. Oh, he did try out his snow foam on my car just after I bought it - that was last summer.....

Hi,

I washed my 500 one week ago and the sticker stripe on the front wing that was missing at delivery and fitted later was sticking to the sponge after the wash.

I had another dealership visit and they replaced it again but this time inside of the garage when the car was warm and dry and also without soap water!

According to their painter which is a close friend of mine, these stickers should never be fitted with soap water and they should not be in contact with water for 24 hours which was not the case the first time.

Will see how long they last this time..

Greetings:

Yesterday I finally did what I was planning to with my Astra with all the washing machine scratches. It was quite a job.... Started 11 in the morning and was finished 11 in the evening. Started with washing the car using a spray on soap solution, then higpreassured it off. Then I washed it using two buckets, Meguires NXT soap and washmitt and dryed it off. Then it was in to the garage to clay it using Meguires clay and quick detailer as lube. Out of the garage again and another wash with two buckets, nxt and mitt. In to the garage again using Meguires scratch-x by hand(hard work), did this on one and one panel, buffed off using micrfiber cloth, then it was time for the Megs paint cleaner still on one and one panel, new microfiber buffing off, moving then on to megs polish on one and one panel and a new microfiber cloth before finishing off with megs nxt 2.0 tech wax and a new microfiber...I used 5 megs applicators on the whole job and four microfibers and a washmagnet. My arms is hurting today. Didn`t really see the finished result because in the last hours of the job it was just a little too dark to see the result. I did not manage to get all the swirls and scratches removed but it is way better than it was, with a deep shine. But I am afraid there is some residue of the products left on the plastics etc because of the light. Offcourse I forgot to take pictures but I will try to take some next time I wash it. My wife is driving it to work today and it is raining : (

Finally got around to detailing the car today. About 5 well spent hours :)

Started off HP washing, then put on Meguiars Hot RimsŪ All Wheel Cleaner and using a Meguiars Ultra-Safe Wheel Spoke Brush to clean the wheels

Continued washing by hand using two buckets with Grit Guards, one filled with clean water and the other with Swissvax Car Bath Shampoo. Used a Micro Fiber wash mitt. After hosing the car down I dryed it using a waffle weave Microfibre Towel.

http://www.500fans.com/picture.php?albumid=42&pictureid=460

http://www.500fans.com/picture.php?albumid=42&pictureid=461

After letting the car dry for a while I covered upp all plastic with painters tape and did a round of Swissvax Cleaner Fluid, using a Swissvax Microfibre applicator pad and a couple of microfibre cloths to wipe off.

http://www.500fans.com/picture.php?albumid=42&pictureid=462

Then it was time for my fairly expensive Swissvax Scuderia Wax, and for this I used another Swissvax applicator pad. The wax contains ultra clean brazilian Grade One carnauba wax (over 40 %). It also has coconut oil and avocado oil, and it smells delicious :wow:

http://www.500fans.com/picture.php?albumid=42&pictureid=463

Let it sit on the paintwork until I finished the car. Then used a couple of Swissvax microfibre towels to buff off the worst before I went over the entire car with a Swissvax MicroPolish Mikrofibre cloth.

I then used Swissvax Pneu wheel renewer to get that black shine on my tyres.

I am so pleased with the result, and the shine kept deepening for a few hours after I finished for a fantastic finish :)
