View Full Version : New family car.

I am considering changing my family car this summer. As I guess you know I have a 2005 Astra with 75000 km on the clock. My original plan was to change it next summer when it is 5 years old, but since I dont have any debt on my cars anymore I am considering this year instead....

What I am looking at is the Insignia( car of the year 2009:)) and the Avensis:eek:. It has got to be wagon or hatch back.

Do you have any ideas for other similar size and price range cars I could look at? Fiat is not an option:mad:
And it must be possible to tow at least 1300 kg:cool:

Insignia: http://www.opel.no/content_data/GME/019/NO/no/GBPNO/microsite/insignialaunch/index.html
Avensis: http://www.nyeavensis.no/

I would definitely go for a Skoda Suberb in that price class! Altough itīs not actually a hatch, but itīs got the dual-function tailgate, which practically makes it a hatch. And itīs got rear legroom like no other car in itīs class! Apparently even the basic 1.4 tsi with 122 hp is a very good car!

I would never buy a toyota, I think they are just so boring! The Insignia is a good looking car though. But these are always matters of taste...

I have tought of the Superb, but I have this thing against V.A.G products(dont know why really:)).
I totally agree that most Toyotas are boring, but I rather like the new Avensis( and no other car brand can match the quality:)).
I am kind of falling towards the Insignia, because it is a little bit cheaper than the Avensis and the service at my dealer is just excellent. Had my astra at the garage today to change the ac compressor( guarantee job), so I asked them if they could have a look at the abs sensors at same time. This is because the light has been a bit on and off lately. They looked at it and cleaned the connections to the sensors, and it didnt cost me a dime:icon_thumleft:

Time will show what I buy, and when I buy it:)

I think that Skoda is by far the best product from vag family. Built by proud czechs. Iīm not a fan of VW or Audi either, and Iīve had such bad experiences with Seat that I wouldnīt by one of those again. That Superb is a good enough looking car in my opinion and if itīs space you are after, itīs definitely got that. But then again, the Insignia is a very good lookin car too, altough not as roomy as the Skoda.

Iīve also seen a few of those new Avensisī around and about. Itīs ok from the outside but pretty much the same as the previous model from the inside. Same buttons and displays and so on. I sometimes (unfortunately) have to drive the previous Avensis at work and it is absolutely hidious to drive! When you go over 80km/h it doesnīt go in a straight line for a one second! And it it impossible to sit comfortably in itīs seats! It may well be the worst car to drive that Iīve ever driven, well except for corolla from the early -90īs. And in my job Iīve driven quite a few models and Iīve also driven them quite hard...;)

Btw. Mondeo is very good car too. But I think itīs a little bit more expencive than these other cars mentioned before.

VilleV
3rd February 2009, 14:44
Of the cars mentioned in this thread the Mondeo is certainly the best one to drive. But Iīve only driven the diesel version and they are more expensive.

I've always been very impressed by Moneos when I've driven them. Have never tried an Insignia, but I truly, truly, truly dislike Vectras (have driven many miles in verious engine / trim combinations) & that has tainted my view of the Insignia..

VilleV
3rd February 2009, 15:00
Apparently the Insignia is supposed to be completely different from the Vectra but these attitudes towards Opel (Vauxhall in Britain) run deep. In every test Iīve read about the Insignia itīs getting compliments, but itīs still losing in comparison to Mondeo and even Passat, which is quite an old model. I have to say, that the previous Mondeo was even better to drive than the current model, but this new model is a much bigger car in every dimension.

The new Superb has just won the winter car of the year test in finnish car magazine Tekniikan maailma (teknikens värld, World of tehcnics, biggest car magazine here)! Only negative in the Superb was that road noice was a bit too high with the winter tires that the test car had on it.
In this same comparison test Fiat 500 came last:eek:, so itīs not a very good winter car they say. Biggest drawbacks were poor heater and the tendency to spin unexpectedly even in the hands of experienced driver when the road surface was slipery.:icon_rolleyes: Alltough this is cured by esp, but they were driving a car without it.

Well, weīve discussed this heater thing with wrecmaster before, so it was no news to me. And most people here use auxiliary heaters to heat their cars before start anyway. Otherwise I think my car is warm enough. And I think it was no news either, that the 500is a little tricky if you go over a bump in a corner when itīs slippery. Thatīs why I got mine with esp.

wreckmaster
6th February 2009, 05:37
Here it comes standard with ESP. On all models (pop/sport/lounge). Cannot buy the 500 without.:icon_thumright:

VilleV
6th February 2009, 06:50
Thatīs how it should be! Here it is optional extra in 1.2 and multijet, but standard in 1.4 models. Cost is 500 euros, which is not bad in my opinion as you also get the hill holder and emergency braking assitant included in that price.

Have been at the Opel dealer today looking at the Insignia and got some prices and brochures... It looks good for sure:cool::cool: Going back on monday for a test drive on a 2.0l CDTI 110hp hatchback. I think actually the hatchback looks better than the wagon..... It`s kind of a Jaguar look to that rear endlol

So I guess we just have to wait to the end of march and have a look at the estate, which also looks pretty good:cool: My wife tought the hatchback had to little rear window(narrow) and way to small mirrors. But I know that the 2.0l CDTI engine is the one I want....just loved it really(and I have always hated diesels:mad: ).

I still have not bought a new car, but I am looking around. My Astra is now over 4 years old and has got nearly a 100 000 km`s on it, but I cant decide really what to buy. So the other day me and my better half was talking about what we really needed....Do we really need a bigger car than the Astra? Probably no..... Do we need a car that will cost us between 320 000 and 350 000 kr`s (Eur: 37000 - 40500)? Probably no..... So what is the options? We need a large boot and we need 4 doors, with enough room in the backseat for 2 children seats. I really want an Alfa, but cant afford one. So then I suddenly came to think about the second best... The Fiat Bravo! It has got a 400l boot( almost the same as my Astra) it has got 4 doors, some great diesel engines, can tow way more caravan than my Astra does and it looks like it is related to an Alfa( which it is offcourselol ) And the best thing it costs only 229 000kr( Eur:26500)!!!! What do you think guys? I still have to sell my Astra first toughlol

VW Passat ?

Passat is a nice car, but it is in the same price range as the Insignia and I am not really into VW! Dont know why really, just a matter of taste I guesslol I easily save a 100 grand buying a Bravo:icon_thumleft:
Been at the Fiat dealer today and the Bravo is surprisingly spaceful for a car it`s size. Larger boot than a Golf and much nicer design:icon_thumright: Looks pretty much like a Alfa light:p Well anyway I have to testdrive it and sell my Astra before I can buy one. And before I can sell the Astra it needs a service an EU check ( norwegian MOT).

Have you been on the FiatUK site. It has a 'configurator' so you can design a vehicle in what spec you would like... just to give you some idea.

When bringing a vehicle from abroad to the UK, you can keep it for a year before you have to apply for 'road tax'. Would that apply in reverse? Mean changing your car every year but could be cheaper option.

wreckmaster
1st September 2009, 15:24
Yes I have been on FiatUK since you cant tailor a Fiat in Norway anymore. Here you can just choose between 1,6 diesel and 1,9 diesel and choose color. The only options where with or without B&M and rubber matts:( They even had to special order the towbar and fit it at the dealership. But I like the Bravo, it has got alot of standards and looks kinda cool in a nice italian waylol If I should import a car I have to pay all taxes on it before I can use it:(

I think I will buy a Bravo when my Astra is gone:icon_thumleft:

I have a new Bravo for testing overnight today. It is a 1,6diesel with 90hp in a ugly greyish kinda brown color. It is a really nice ride, and it feels like its got a lot more horses than 90... It also got a lovely 6 gear transmission:icon_thumleft: If I decide on buying one I belive it will be a great car to tow my caravan with:) Whats holding me back is that I want it in red, but red is not in stock so I will have to wait three months for one:eek: They have it in black which also is a nice color, but there is something italian about red that I want. So the decission is to buy or not to buy and if I should buy should I wait for three months for a red one or should I just go for a black one that I can have in three weeks:confused:

Cadbury

My Astra is going in to the Fiat dealer for trade in valuation next monday, but I told the dealer that if he gave me 100 000++ for the Astra I will buy a Bravo:icon_thumleft: Have to wait three months tough, since I decided on a red one with roof spoiler, tinted windows, tow bar and B&M. Probably 1,6 D!

The garage space is reserved for the 500 and the Neckarlol But there is a fair chance the 500 will spend some more quality time in it`s cozy garage together with his older uncle from Germanylollol

And now it snows:( I have washed the Astra and made it ready for trading inn earlier today.... It snows very MUCH.. In just an hour or so it has fallen down a 3-4cm.. Lots of accidents because of the sudden snow. Not a good thing to collect a new car tomorrow if this continues, alltough the forcast says rain tomorrow:( I dont want to make it dirty as soon as it comes out of the store:(:(

Good luck. You should call your co-worker and have them escort you with the ambulance sirens and lights going. So the Bravo makes it home safe.
