What do you 500 owners out there do for a living?
I am an ambulance worker/EMT. Have been doing this for the last 10 years.
In january I am starting on a three year part time college program to become an Paramedic.
When I`m not working on the ambulance I am working part time as an tow truck operator and the rest of the time I am taking care of my two little boys(2 and 4years). So I got pretty busy dayslol

Hi,
I am an automotive engineer working for an automotive component supplier.
I am working in EMS development. Cold development tests in northern Sweden and Hot development on test tracks in Spain are the fun part of it.
I must admit that for me, who was growing up with parents who collect old-timers; it is the most interesting job that I can imagine even after 19 years of service. It is challenging and you have to stay up to speed with all of the latest data acquisition and evaluation tools. The only negative part might be all of the related paperwork and reporting. We are developing the cars that come out in a few years time.biggrin2

Here some of the pictures I took on our last test trip.
You can see the cold and when you are there you can really feel it.
The 2nd picture was taken on our lake circular track. This is a big circle of about 300 meters diameter on a frozen lake. The ice is (supposed to be) totally safe. On some neighbour tracks there is a company testing trucks.
The lowest temperatures we ever had over there was 3 years ago with a peak of -41.5 outside on the lake.:)

-41.5 C

8th January 2009, 00:55
Great photos!
WOW -41.5!!! that's 71.5 C colder than here at the moment
Hard to imagine really!
I have been to the outback here where they do hot weather testing, around Alice Springs, it can get to the mid to high 40's and there are no speed limits on the roads :) Sadly there was nothing about when I was there and it was too hot to hang around car spotting :)

minime911
8th January 2009, 02:43
Well,-41.5 was an extreme. Our wished temperature is usually between -16 to -25.A car must start at -25 deg. after an overnight soak below 3 seconds of crank, usually without foreign help. But as there is also global warming in northern Sweden so we have installed special cold chambers to cool down the cars in case if the temperatures are not right. Actually such cold temperatures are not that bad; below -15 deg you will not feel any difference. You only cool down much faster and your nose stops dripping as it freezes inside. Of course you need the right clothes. The place we go is one of the main test places for cars in Europe. You can find info about it on the Internet. Just google for Arjeplog. It's there where car spies take most of the pictures from prototype vehicles that you can see in the car magazines. Summer tests are usually done at a test centre close to Barcelona. It is called IDIADA. The IDIADA track was build some years ago by the state of Catalunia and financed by the European community. It is rented by most of the European car manufacturers that don't have their own hot test facilities. There is also the Nardo high speed track in south Italy. It is the Fiat home track which also can be rented by other car manufacturers. I have been there many years ago and it is a very impressive test track but a 2 day's drive to get there from the central Europe.Greetings:minime911

Sorry for the confusion. Actually the trucks are not not the pictures but on the neighbour lake tracks. I will not post any pictures of prototypes. Althoug you are allowed to take pictures of everything you can see driving on open roads in Sweden, we as car testers respect some unwritten rules not to publish pictures of competitor cars as we also don't want to see our cars in the papers. I can even say that in general people help each other in case of need or emergency although they work for different companies. At the end of the world you have to stick together.:)
