I bought xenon style bulbs from ebay - so much better than the standard ones but not quite as bright (or expensive!) as proper xenons.

Hi,
Although it is not legal but you can get Xenon burners and ballast kits over here and also on Ebay.
Those are real xenon lights and not just clear white bulbs.
They are illegal because there is a rule that Xenon lights must have a lense washing system and automatic height adjustment but who knows that they are installed, apart from drivers that come across during the night when your lights are not adjusted correctly.biggrin2

Well in the UK I could get away with it for 2.5 years, until it has to be Mot inspected

Not sure if MOT will find out about that one and it will only take a few minutes to fit back the original bulbs.biggrin2

If you are importing a car from the UK, how do you go on if it needs warranty work ?

Hi,
I don't see how aftermarket Xenon lights could make your electrical system fail in a way that it would become a warranty case.
As said, it would only take a few minutes to fit back the original bulbs in case of a doubt.biggrin2
The Xenon system is an independent circuit that gets commanded by the original wiring.
I have installed such an aftermarket system from Saleen which is a tuning supplier for Ford since ages, on a friend's new Mustang and it was quite simple.
In the US this is totally legal even without automatic adjustment and also without cleaning system.
You can find the Xenon kits starting 65 Euros or so on Ebay, in our local shop they are also around 200 but they are not allowed to be used on open roads although they are CE certified and German TUV tested.
To make it 100% correct we could wait until Fiat or some accessories supplier puts them on the market maybe one day in the far future.lol

I was planning on doing a H.I.D. projector xenon retrofit.
That is annoying about the MOT test, in California we only have to worry about SMOG (emissions) tests, once your car is 5 years old.

I'd definately look to upgrade to Xenons or Xenon effect bulbs. My Polo has Xenons and they are absolutely brilliant, so much better than normal headlamps, plus they make the car look much more expensive

while my car was in for it's repairs (see bad day) i fitted Philip's ice white bulb's to the head lamp's main beam & front fog lamps as for the running lights on one doe's upgrade bulb's as they are double element bulb which are normally used as stop tail bulbs on merc's and nissan's ;)
