Tought it would be fun to make a thread where we can post what we have done with our cars today? Washing, waxing, polishing, fixing, bought new stuff, changing wheels etc....Like a day to day thread:)

Me first: Today I have been changing from winterwheels to summerwheels and washing the winterwheels with Megs HotRims and a wheelbrush before I HP them off and let them dry in the sun:icon_thumleft:
( on thursday night at job I had the summerwheels with me on job so I washed them with hotrims and polished them with Megs nxt wax using a foam applicator anf a MF to buff off again). Looking good with 16" multispokes on again:icon_thumright:

Lefty... a shiny 500 smilie please;) haha

As it is dull, raining and damp here, the only thing me and Cadbury did today was go out and buy a new microwave (mine blew up:mad:)

Weather should be better for us tomorrow... but that is another day (post!)

I have a 20 gallons (75 liter thanx to google converter) tank. It was like $43 to fill 'er up. I'd pay more for gas to avoid people from dying in the war, but I don't make the decisions (and that subject is another thread).

It cost me like £28 ($40) to fill my 500 up, for 25 litres, tax is about 50p tax for 90p petrol

I just used two hours of "weekly excercise" time at work to change my summerwheels on.:icon_thumleft: What a difference it makes to not have studded tyres on the car, especially with the road noise!!! And also its nice to have the original alloys on my car again, they just make it look so much nicer.

Today I have cleaned the interiour of my Astra, first vacuum for an hour or so( Yes I have kids:rolleyes:) then sprayed on some Megs interiour and carpet cleaning, working it in with a Megs Interiour brush before vacuum off again, is now drying. Became a lot better, but not perfect:(. At least it smells nice and clean:icon_thumleft: .I have also taken out the summeralloys for the Astra and cleaned them with a brush and Megs HotRims before HP off. Gone change them on to the car later today:icon_thumleft:

Today I went shopping and bought some AutoGlym products; wax, shampoo and hi-tech finishing cloth. First I was supposed to go and buy this certain carwax from a shop called Biltema (Wrecky might know it from sweden, dont know if you have it Norway) that won a wax comparision test in the latest issue of AutoBild Finland. Its supposed to be quite good since it was tested better than for example Swisswax Scuderia which costs 117e/200ml and Sonax Premium class carnauba care that costs 65e/200ml. And this Biltema wax costs only 5,49e/500ml!!! But offcourse it was sould out. And thats got nothing to do with the test result, I would imagine... Well, I´m still happy that I got some new products that I can treat my car with!

We have Biltema in Norway too, what is the winning Biltema wax called? Better than Scuderia??? For real??? Autoglym is good, but I think I prefere Meguires. Which AG wax did you buy? Did you buy a polish to buff up the color and shine too?

Wonder how they tested it.. Finde me a cheap Biltema wax that contains over 40% white carnauba wax...

I'll stick with my Swissvax thank you :)

The test was done using highest level of scientific measurements, I´m sure...lol Well, They devided a side of an old Panda into eight squares and used different waxes on each square. The side of the car was threated first to give it equal shine all over. Then they took 25 measurements with a device called "Picogloss 560 mc" -shinemeter (what ever that is) while they washed the car in between measurements several times. During the test this Biltema wax gave very good readouts that vere almost identical to those of much more expensive waxes but because of its low price it came on top. They also judged how easy the wax was to apply and polish, but I guess thats allways a question of opinion.

I wouldnt think that this Biltema wax is better than those mentioned before, but at that price I would certainly have wanted to test it. But as I said it was allready sold out and for sure thats because of the Autobild article!

I went for the Super resin polish wax and didnt buy the seperate polish. Do you recon it makes a difference and I should get it also??

wreckmaster
16th April 2009, 14:32
I belive after beeing reading on different detailerforums that you should get separate polishes and waxes to get a maximum dept and shine. I think that AG super resin is a 2 in 1 product. I have used it before and it is very good to apply and to buff off, but I am not sure how long it lasts. A polish is used to buff up the color of the paint and to remove small scratches and swirls, while a wax is just to protect the paint. If you use a polish and dont wax it soon after, the effect of the polish will fade soon. Anyway what you should choose to use you should use a good degreeser to remove small particles of asphalt and salt that is stuck to the paint. Because if you dont the wax/polish will make this small particles to loosen up and they will get stuck under your product applicator pad and make swirls. Ideally you should first degreas, then wash with shampoo and washmitt, then dry off with waffleweave microfiber, then clay, then wash again, then paintcleaner, then polish and finaly wax it:icon_thumleft:

Today I have foamed my 500, then HP off, washed with 2 buckets and mitt, dryed off, used a quick detailer on the paint. And I have vacuumcleaned it inside and used a quick detailer interiour spray on the plastics using a microfiber and a interiour detailer brush. I have also washed the sills and polished them and the inside of the doors and waxed them:icon_thumleft:
I have also foamed, washed and dryed the Astra:)

Degrasing is fast, just spray on and let it work for a couple of minutes, then wash it ,dry off and use the product you like, either a all-in-one or separate polish and waxes. I did the whole package on the Astra a couple of weeks back and it took about 12 hours.....my arms was pretty bad the next daylol

Today I have had a engine wash on my Astra. Used a degreaser, let it work for 3-4 minutes before I snow foamed the engine bay and the underside of the bonnet, let it work for 4-5 minutes and HP off beeing carefully not to spray directly on electronic connections before I handwashed it with a sponge () and Megs NXT soap in a strong solution:icon_thumleft: HP off again and finally buffed dry with an cheap MF. Became great:icon_thumright:
After beeing done with the engine bay I snow foamed the whole car and HP off just to be sure I got any residue from the degraser off the paint. Finishing with drying the whole car with Megs waffleweave water magnet. Started the car and let it idle for an hour and drove a short drive to get any moist that was left to disaper.

I know:) Try prickbort, it is supposed to work on almost everything. Did you buy the Megs HotRims or the other one, because HotRims is stronger(acid).

Are you not using a Swisswax QD to refresh your beautiful Scuderia waxed car? Alltough the Megs QD is great. I have the Megs QD that comes with the clay package and it is excellent. ( bought Megs NXT speed detailer with the other stuff today, cant wait to try it! ).

I get my salary on tuesday so I think I am going to order the basic package from Swisswax then, including Scuderia:yahoo:

Wasen`t to happy with the last job I did by hand:( So I used the DA to apply 2 layers of Megs scratchX, doing half the bonnet at a time. After half the bonnet with the first layer I could see a really big difference in the shine and most of the light scratches and swirls were gone:icon_thumleft: After I had done the bonnet two times with scratchx I went on to use Megs Deep Crystal paint cleaner with the DA, then Megs Deep Crystal polish with the DA and at last a layer of Megs NXT 2.0 tech wax applyed by hand on the whole car. My Karcher foam lance is also from Clean Your Car and it is excellent. It actually feels more quality than the original Karcher stuff I`ve got:icon_thumleft:

I dont have any dedicated snow foam so I am using Megs NXT car wash or Autosmart car wash from Clas Ohlsson. The Autosmart car wash is very concentrated and great value for the money, think it costs 79kr pr liter.
Where did you buy the AEZ wheel cleaner? What was the price? Please let us know what it is like when you have tried it? Are you satisfied with the Scuderia so far, after a few washes? Does it still got the "bling" ?lol

Yesterday I foamed (got a new foam cannon for my Karcher) and HPed the car, washed with Swissvax Car Bath, mitt and two buckets with gritguard, Used Meguiars Gold Class™ Trim Detailer on all the exterior black bits, Swissvax Pneu on the tyres and I vacuumed the car and used Meguiars Quik Interior Detailer™ on the interior plastics. I also treated my seats and leather with Swissvax Leather Glaze.

After that I waxed the car using Swissvax Scuderia applied by hand (latex gloves) and buffed off with a Swissvax MF polishing cloth.

This turned out to be a mistake as the latex gloves seemed to create some swirls (must have been some dirt from the car that I dragged around) so at some point I'll have to use a machine and polish those swirls off. But, you'll have to be anal to see the swirls so it's probably only me that will see them. My GF could not.. (doesn't know what to look for).

Oh Wrecky... nothing so elaborate as you ... Meguires Carnuba.

I had the Supaguard and Cadbury only seems to get a minor layer of dirt (even after motorway driving with the rain lashing down) which is washed off with Supaguard Acid Rain Shampoo followed by Meguires.

It is either the Supaguard or just that Punk Grey is a colour that doesn't show the dirt, unlike white.

My first 500 (Aggy) was white (then green, then blue) and I vowed never to have white again

First washing the car
Foam with Citrus and Gloss using foam cannon
Two bucket and mitt wash with Swissvax Car Bath
Then clay with Swissvax clay kit
Machine polish with Meguiars Scratch X and my DA machine (haven't got time to wait for the Swissvax Cleaner Fluid Pro i ordered)
Apply Swissvax Cleaner Fluid with the DA to prepare for wax
Finish off with as many layers of Swissvax Scuderia Wax I have time for, this time using the Swissvax applicator pad.

She is a basic 1.2 petrol lounge. When I first got her, I did use the outside lane to avoid the dreaded lorries, so was doing above 80-85 quite alot.

Sad sack that I am, each time I go to my Mum's I try to better the mpg. I have had 59mpg which I am pleased with, but to do that I have to go at 60mph..... unless a lorry starts gaining on me.

Your Dad must be impressed with Bambina. What sort of discount did he get? Is Electrclash like the picture on here? And yes, make sure he signs in here

phew...

I am tired now.. Finished the car, but the Meguiars Scratch X was not strong enough to get rid of all the swirls.. Will have to attack the car again later this summer. But by all means, the car looks superb today.

Started off with gathering all my car stuff in the boot (and yes I have stolen the little boot garden idea :) ) Even the small 500 has been polished today, using Swissvax Cleaner Fluid then Swissvax Scuderia...

http://www.500fans.com/picture.php?albumid=42&pictureid=622

I then foamed the car using a very high ratio mix of Chemical Guys Citrus Wash & Gloss. I love my foam cannon, and I get some looks when people walk by and the car is covered in shaving foam thick soap..

http://www.500fans.com/picture.php?albumid=42&pictureid=623

http://www.500fans.com/picture.php?albumid=42&pictureid=624

http://www.500fans.com/picture.php?albumid=42&pictureid=625

Then I dried off the car using my trusted microfibre towels. I checked a few panels with my Swissvax Clay but there was no ingrown dirt so I didn't do the whole car.
Ended up with a very clean car :)

http://www.500fans.com/picture.php?albumid=42&pictureid=626

http://www.500fans.com/picture.php?albumid=42&pictureid=627

http://www.500fans.com/picture.php?albumid=42&pictureid=629

http://www.500fans.com/picture.php?albumid=42&pictureid=630

I dressed the tyres with Swissvax Pneu and a Meguiars Applicator Pad

http://www.500fans.com/picture.php?albumid=42&pictureid=633

Then I taped all the black and chrome bits of the car and set to work using Meguiars Scrach X with my Dual Action polishing machine. Unfortunately Scratch X was not strong enough to do anything about the worst swirls, so I will have to try again later this summer with some better stuff (Swissvax Cleaner Fluid Pro)

I also did the whole car with Swissvax Cleaner Fluid using the DA machine. Buffed off with Swissvax MF towel, did the squeak test and there was no wax left on the car.

After that it was wax time, and I applied Swissvax Scuderia using the black SV applicator pad and buffing with a SV towel and the Swissvax polishing cloth. The result speaks for itself..

What kind of pads did you use on the DA? I did my sisters Corsa a few weeks ago and the Scratch X was excellent. And the Corsa was BAD!!!! with swirls and scratches. Only the deepest scratches did remain, but even they got a lot better:). How many passes did you have? Did you moist the pad with a QD or water?
Did you use any preassure on the DA and start slow, speed it up for a few passes and then slow down again for the last passes? Did you work the scratch X in so it got all clear and only had a thin gray residue left?

I use the Sonax pads from Chlas Ohlsson and used moisture (water), did slow and fast passes, in some areas 10-20 passes. But I used the Scratch-X 1.0, I hear the 2.0 is better, maybe that's what you have?
Or maybe the Fiat paint is harder?

Then it has to be the paint that's different. You would know it if you had the 2.0 as it says 2.0 on the tube.

Guess i'll have to see what happens when you do your car :)

phew...

I am tired now.. Finished the car, but the Meguiars Scratch X was not strong enough to get rid of all the swirls.. Will have to attack the car again later this summer. But by all means, the car looks superb today.

Started off with gathering all my car stuff in the boot (and yes I have stolen the little boot garden idea ) Even the small 500 has been polished today, using Swissvax Cleaner Fluid then Swissvax Scuderia...

http://www.500fans.com/picture.php?albumid=42&pictureid=622

I then foamed the car using a very high ratio mix of Chemical Guys Citrus Wash & Gloss. I love my foam cannon, and I get some looks when people walk by and the car is covered in shaving foam thick soap..

Then I dried off the car using my trusted microfibre towels. I checked a few panels with my Swissvax Clay but there was no ingrown dirt so I didn't do the whole car.
Ended up with a very clean car :)

The car duster is great:icon_thumleft: It doesent drag the dust over the paint, it is more like it absorbs it into the duster. Leaving no dragmarks on the paint:cool: But it is not recomended on road dust, only use it on "pollen".

Today is a 'D' day of a different kind. Like other some other countries, the UK government introduced a new car purchase incentive scheme where you can get £2000 (half from them, half from manufacturer) by scrapping your old car in exchange for a new one. We're using this scheme to buy our 500. Sadly, the car that's being sacrificed is a 1970 Morris Minor which we've owned since 1989. Because the MOT (road worthiness certificate) expires today, it's literally the end of the road. If we tried to sell the car, we could get maybe £1200 for it, so economy has to prevail. Plus I'm getting too old and infirm to maintain it like I used to ;) It's like taking your faithful old dog to the vet that last time. :yelling:
Felt a bit like this when I parted with my Lotus after eighteen years of ownership. The difference there was, an enthusiast bought it, so hopefully it's still running. The Morris has to be scrapped under the rules of the scrappage scheme. This Fiat had better be worth it..........

Don't disagree with you Wreckmaster. It needed about £200 worth of structural repairs. It wasn't an easy decision, but that's it. It's gone to the Fiat dealer. Last journey video'd by my daughter for posterity. Will have to wait a few weeks for the 500 though.
At the end of the day, it's just a car. My wife's car, and her decision ultimatley. It gave us twenty years of cheap motoring, with two 'major' rebuilds during that time. Truth is, I lost all enthusiasm for motoring some years ago. The last job I did on the Morris was to change the cylinder head gasket about six years ago. Other UK members of this forum will disagree with me I'm sure, but motoring in most parts of the UK now is not an enjoyable experience. Too many cars on the road. Too crowded. You're right VilleV, a collector / enthusiast would have bought it, but in the end, we couldn't have got £2000 for it. So, the head ruled the heart. The 500 is the closest thing we saw to a modern version of the Minor. Don't like that VW Beetle, and the new Mini is - in my opinion - c**p. Perhaps I should have renamed this posting 'the grumpy old man column'. lol

As requested by Wreckmaster, a few photos of the Morris. Not very good, they were taken for the insurance company. The UK scrappage scheme has claimed a number of cars considered to be classics or future classics. A number of Mazda MX5's, Datsun Z's, MGB GT, Austin 1100, MG Midget to name a few. If the Morris hadn't needed quite a lot of welding, we would have sold it for around £1200 and easily managed the difference on the 500 price. But that's it now. The Fiat 500 we've ordered will be virtually unique. It's a standard 1.2 POP with NO extras except door strips.biggrin2
Sorry to hear Norwegain weather is the same as UK weather. It's been raining here too.:(:(

I have this thing for odd classics that most collectors dont even want to have look atlol Like Morris, Wolsleys, Triumph Heralds, Austins, Simcas, DKWs, Wartburgs, Pobedas etc.... My dad has even got an Standard Vanguard wagon from 1952:) But it is a ongoing project. Beside the Standard he has got a 54 Opel Kapitan and a 1952 Mercedes 170S.

When it comes to Morris, I am kind of dreaming of an Minor woody wagon:icon_thumleft: That is such a cool car:)

Needed floor pan and sills replacing, both sides :( It could be done, it was last done about ten years ago. The woody Minor's (Travellers) are expensive to buy (for good ones). £3000 - £6000! Nice though, but the wood is structural, so if it rots the car becomes unsafe!!
We never know what cars might become collectible in the future. The 500 is a candidate I think. Since 1979, I and/or my wife have owned 23 cars. Amongst them was an Austin A40 Farina, an Austin 1300 Countryman, a Triumph Spitfire III, an MGB Roadster, a Mini 1000, A Landrover 2A, a couple of Citroen 2CV's and a Lotus Elan +2S. All but the Lotus probably in the big scrapyard in the sky :crying4:
Good luck with your dad's rebuild. I think my dad had a Standard back in the 50's. I'll ask him when I see him next. :icon_thumleft:
If we keep the 500 for next thirty years, it will definitely be a classic. Can't see me doing much maintenance on it though, I'll be 77 years old:eek:

I am in the progress of trying to do something to my fathers 54 Kapitan. This car my father has had for nearly 30 years. I was only 4-5 years when he bought it from my cousin. He has not done anything with it except for mechanical maintance, brakes, gaskests, exhaust etc. So the car is as close to 100% original as possible except for the paint. It has been painted sometime in the late 60`s or in the 70`s. The car has got a 2,5l inline 6 engine with 70hp( I think), 3 speed manual transmission where the 1 gear is unsyncronized. The gear shifter is on the steering wheel. It has got a 6volt electrical system and no power steering and power brakes. It handles like a large lorry in cornerslol It has got a 3 seating sofa in the front and the same in the back.

But over the years the paint has gone into the a really terrible state. Really worn out and losy most of its former shine. So there is where I come in. And it turns out to be a real challenge.

So far I have washed it with Turtle wash prewash gel, foamed it twice with Bilt-Hamber auto foam, washed it with the 2BM, mitt and a strong solution of Megs NXT soap. Dried it with Megs water magnet. Clayed it using Megs clay kit, foamed it again with B-H Autofoam, washed it again as described, dried it again and parked it in the garage for more drying....

The plan is to go over it with Megs Deep Crystal paint cleaner1 with my DA and then a round with Megs Scratch X before I polish it up with Megs Deep Crystal polish 2, and at last a coat of Megs NXT 2.0 tech wax or Swissvax Scuderia.

I have some hours of work aheadlol

Beside this I have foamed my 500 today using B-H autofoam, washed it with 2BM, waschpudel and Megs softwash. Then dried with cobra the guzzler HD drying towel. WOW!!!! what a difference compared to my watermagnets!!! Svisj and svosj and the whole car was drylol I got almost scared of getting dehydrated my selflol

The Opel looks great. A lot of work to keep the paint looking nice though. A much bigger surface area than a Fiat 500 :)
The configuration / layout sounds very similar to a Vauxhall PA Cresta (one of my family's cars I remember from when I was young). Vauxhall being UK versions of Opel, likely to be based on many of the same components.

Been very remiss and not had time to wash Cadbury for a fortnight :( Only noticed how really dirty she was by the state of her front wheels. Bodywork didn't look too bad but today she was washed and waxed (two buckets and loads of microfibre mitts Wrecky;). I am sure it is the Supaguard and the Anti Acid Shampoo that keeps the bodywork looking clean.

I have foamed, washed with two buckets and mitt, and dried off my 500 today.
Discovered one small dent from a door on the drivers side rear panel. Hardly noticeable but still.. :( Assholes!!
I also covered a few stone chips with my chip removal kit.

I bought a new flat last week so now my 500 will have a garage :)

Probably a touch up stick with the correct paint. You can buy them at the dealers. They come with your correct color in one end, and clear paint in the other end:icon_thumleft:

Our vacation was great:icon_thumleft: The hotel was really good, but not very greek.... Excellent for kids, but with entertainment like a ferry to Denmark ( or Stockholm in your caselol ) and food from a production line...Great for those who are into thatlol I missed the greek feeling:( Rhodos town was beautiful, specially the old town:icon_thumleft: We did even manage to squeeze in a dive trip, which was great. Also rented a car a day and went to Lindos and the Acropolis there:)

About the swine flu, dont worry too much about it! Even tough my wife had it, it was milder than a normal flu and was over in about a week. I did not get it, but I got a sore throat and some cold symptoms( dont know if it was swine related:eek:)

Today I have foamed, washed, dried and swisswaxed my 500:icon_thumleft: Then I vacuumed it inside and used Megs interiuour quick detailer on the dash. Before I had some SV pneu on the wheels. Have also paired my new Iphone with the B&M:cool:

Megs hot rims on all wheels X 2, a strong solution of Bilt-Hamber autofoam and Megs NXT X with my foamlance, let this dvell for about 10 minutes before I HP`d it all off. Then mixed a strong solution of NXT and washed it with the SV waschpudel and 2BM, before drying it off with a Micropak waffleweave( the water was totally dead on the car, no trace of any beading there so it was quite a job to get it dry:() After drying I went over the car with Megs Ultimate Quick detailer and a few clean MF`s for buffing just to get some bling into the paint againlol Then I dried off inside the doors etc....which completly destroyed one of my old watermagnets:eek:
Before ending it all with some SV pneu on the wheels and on the mudflaps:icon_thumleft: My mother in law was quite happy when she did see the result:icon_thumright: So she invited my for sunday dinner today( norwegian meat cakes, sauerkrat, boiled potatos, brown sauce and jam:p) Cant waitlol
