Fiat may employ several hundreds new workers in its Tychy plant unless the crisis stops it from launching new production lines.
Fiat Auto Poland with its Tychy plant is Poland's biggest car producer. In 2008, the company employed 1,000 new people to work at the assembly of Ford Ka.
"We are considering to employ several hundreds people at the end of the first and beginning of the second quarter of 2009 ", Zdzislaw Arlet, Tychy plant director said.
He added that not necessarily a new model will be produced in Tychy.
"You may always develop the range of cars already produced at a plant", Mr. Arlet said only.
He gives no more details.
Analysts, however, believe that a new model may be produced.
"There have been rumors for some time that the successor of Fiat 600, earlier Seicento, would be produced in Tychy. This would be an economic car offered to less wealthy clients", Wojciech Drzewiecki, the CEO of Samar car market institute said.
