Luton was the last of the London airports to fully open today, although fog hit us today about 4pm.

Last Friday (18th) I walked out of my village to the steep hill I would have to go down to get to work... but met a fella WALKING up it !! He had tried four times to get up the hill but ended up abandoning his car... hey ho... Christmas holidays started early for me !

Have a good 'un

Nice backyard! I have heard on the news that you have had pretty bad weather over there lately also :) I am driving to Stockholm tomorrow as I am going to take the ferry to Riga, Lithaunia! So we hope the weather gods are with us on the drive to Stockholm(7-8hours) and across the Baltic sea :) Was actually thinking of going to Helsinki but there was no availeble ferry from S. Holm tomorrow so we did choose Riga instead :)

VilleV

I checked both Tallink and Viking line and it was availeble trips with Viking but they where expensive:( Tallink might have been full I guess....
We wanted to go to Helsinki because of the "Sea world" park. The boys would have liked it:icon_thumright:
Some other time maybe:)

Riga was fine but coldlol Walked around in old town for a while in zero degrees, snow falling and a lot of wind:eek: So after a while we found shelter in a shopping malllol The ferry stayed in Riga for about 6 hours, so it was not a long trip:) But we had to nice nights on the Baltic sea, with good food, taxfree shopping and weird russian showslol The boys loved it:icon_thumleft:

Not quite as cold here, but it's cold for US. Right now it's "9F" outside. I think we had a 'high' of "11" today. Man, that was hot!!! :p

I went out once....to go to the store to do our weekly shopping for food. Good thing I didn't have to go out for anything else. :D

The coldest I remember here in Indiana was during "The Blizzard of '78" when it was something like -20F with a 'wind chill factor' of -45F!!!!

The snow was so deep that the city had to use Army Tanks and Half-Tracks with snow-plows to clear the main streets. :icon_rolleyes:

There is a sauna just outside of the photo!lol But no vodka for those purists in the pic I believe... I´ve swam in frozen lake and it´s quite refreshing and not as bad as you would think because the air is so much colder than the water. Water never gets below 0c but on that day the air temperature was well below it!

I must be a different type of finn because I enjoy more when its hot. Our holiday plans came thru and we are of to Miami Beach on monday!!! I´m so exited since I´ve never been to the States before! Can our US members give me any good pointers of what to do and see over there?

You just have to: rent a car and go cruising out over the keys and go to Key West!!! Me and Guttemamma did it a few years back and it is great. I saw it on the news that you brits are having quite a winter too. Today a blizzard in north England and Scotland and tomorrow London is supposed to be in chaos!

This kind of weather is really hard for my little Fiat. I have to heat it up atleast two hours before every start and once i get it free of snow its blizzard time again and the car resembles a snowball on wheels...

I've said it before, our bit of the UK just doesn't seem to get much bad weather, it just gets colder. A few millimeters of snow at most - so far. Chaos last Sunday though, when a gas explosion closed down all the roads in town. We were doing a bit of shopping, and the only way out was to ignore the 'one way' signs and go the wrong way  All the police were at the scene of the explosion though, so there was no one to tell us off! As can be seen on these photo's, no snow!

It is still rather cold in Germany. Near the Rhine it is moderately cold, it's all around 0 degrees for all 24 hours a day. It is a grey day again with some real fine snowflakes in the air.
The weather report talks of a greater amount of snow in the next days. People here don't want it at all, for in the Rhine area will be the carnival parades coming weekend, mainly in Dusseldorf, Cologne and Mainz.

This thing in not just bad for the paint but for the engine also, do not use your cars or bikes if its rain volcanic ash!!!

VilleV
16th April 2010, 11:59
I think at the moment these ash clouds are quite high up and shouldn´t really bother people too much (I hope...). At least this is what they are saying in the news here, although if this continues for much longer people with asthma could suffer from symptoms!

Problems begin when an airplane flies through this kind of cloud!

wreckmaster
16th April 2010, 13:11
I read today that the ash was not bad for the paint, as it dont make any chemical reaction and is considered a dead material! The problem is when the ashes lays like a dust cover and the car and you wash the car! The ashes is really small particles of glass and if you use a sponge (God forbidd) you will drag the tiny particles around on your paint and make scratch markes(swirls). So it is extremly important that you spray on some soap or foam first and rinse it well before starting to wash it by your hand! I belive the airfilter on your car will take care of the worst of the particles when it comes to driving!

The airport where Guttemamma works is closed and she is on forced leave without payment from sunday:( Hopefully the worst will be over by then, but the forecast dosen`t look good! And if the big volcano erupts also, all hell will be loose! There is a 75% chance for Ketla to erupt too, as it is usually trigged by the smaller volcano which is erupting now. And the small one which makes all this trouble seems to grow in strength and intensity:(

VilleV

Lets hope it doesnt happen, and also that winds turn to the south and blow all these ashes north!

That´s important info you wrote Thomas about washing a car! I have to consider that when I´m washing mine!

North of Norway has actually had some local airtraffic today, but the forecast says it wont get any better here in the south yet! The worst part is that all ambulance helicopters and planes are grounded also:( There has been cases today where patients has been transported with critical conditions for 8-10hours in ambulances, instead of 45minutes in planes / helicopters! My ambulance service has sent ambulances and medics to the northern parts of Norway today. A 48hour drive through Sweden and Finland. This is because the distances in the north are extreme and with even longer transports because of grounded planes there are hardly any ambulances left on standby:eek:

Norway sure is a difficult country to travel by land! And this thing is putting human lives at risk already so I hope it will end soon! Here the biggest problem besides people getting around is the donated organs and people in need of them. With distances around 200km and over they are usually transported by helicopters but ofcourse that is impossible at tho moment.

oh and btw, Finnish airforce F-18 Hornets from north of Finland had damaged their engines yesterday while on training flights so this threat to airtaffic is no make believe! The ash had actually burned onto the surface of the jet engines!

If it stays active for more than a couple of days the economical consequences will be terrible! In a few weeks time airlines will start to fall that´s for sure. :(

"No Summer in 2010":

I always thought it was a specific german way of seeing things: Take some news and expect the worse!
Here in Germany most people are astonished every morning when they don't get the news Hamburg has sunk in the ocean because of global warming. Most people wait for an attack by Al Qaida on the Cologne Cathedrale. Of course germans think of getting no summer this year.

But is it similar in other countries?

Same herelol Everything that happends is a sympthom of an close coming acopacalypselol

Looks better with the plane situation tough! Experts says now that this is not dangerous unless you fly direct through the main steam from the volcano:) Lufthansa and KLM had several testflights yesterday and they say nothing hapend to the planes at all:) They tested in several different heights and everything was normal:) Test flights will continue today:icon_thumleft:

I belive things will normalize within the first few days of the upcoming week:) But the airports in southern Norway is still closed tough.....And Guttemamma is still on forced leave without pay:(

Without any filters in the chemneys of the coking plants and furnaces and steel mills we had a lot of dust in the air, here in the Ruhr region up to the seventies of the 20th century. But there were summers!

I saw one big Lufthansa jet landing in Munich on TV. They said there was no problem, that's the same information as you have.

20,000 germans are on Mallorca and another 14,000 on Teneriffa. Many of them had planned to go to work on Monday.

The Formula 1 teams are caught in China and can't get home. Maybe they could organize a race from Shanghai to Barcelona?! Good idea?

We get that sort of attitude here and there in California. Not too bad though.

My thought is always, how can you people be depressed in sunny California!?! I mean, seriously!

There will always be bad things happening in the world. The world is very far from perfect, and always will be. That's just a fact.

All we can hope to do, is do the best with what God gave us and not let fear control your actions, or rule your life. We must take charge and try to have a great day:icon_thumright:
